- to co-ordinate the common interests of Merit NL contractors in the construction industry
- to provide facilities for the exchange of information and opinions between Merit NL contractors, employees, government departments and agencies, owner groups and other interested parties
- to support the right of employers and employees to promote free enterprise
- to promote the application of merit in the award of contracts and compensation of employees
- to encourage business practices which contribute to cost effective construction
- to foster and facilitate high levels of employment and morale for employers and employees in the construction industry through development, sponsorship, promotion and co-ordination of programs and services related to recruitment, performance, remuneration and employment security
- to sponsor educational programs and services to assist its members apply the principles of merit and become better informed about developments, trends and problems in the construction industry
- to develop training programs that will result in a balanced supply of appropriately qualified construction trades persons that can participate freely in a competitive market
- to promote and support apprenticeship training in the construction industry
- to promote and support sound legislation in the areas of labour relations, workers compensation, safety standards, working conditions, apprenticeship training and unemployment compensation for employees in the construction industry
